‘Oxtail and curry goat’ dreams have died — Holness
OPPOSITION leader Andrew Holness says the “dreams of oxtail and curry goat”, perpetuated by supporters of the ruling People’s National Party (PNP) following that party’s return to power in the 2011 have died.
Addressing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Area Council One delegates on Sunday in Kingston, Holness recalled a PNP supporter on television on the night of the December 29, 2011 election, who felt that her party’s victory meant a change from “eating chicken back” to “eating oxtail and curry goat”.
“But, what has happened since? Not only has the product become scarce, but it has become even more expensive, now. The dream of oxtail and curry goat has just evaporated, vanished,” he said.
“This Government has failed and you know what, they can’t turn on the JLP and blame us. They promised that there would be work, and JEEP-load of work: What has happened to JEEP? Unemployment is at its highest in almost 15 years,” he stated.
Holness was referring to the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme on which the PNP had campaigned.
But, he said, now people have realised that they were tricked into voting for the PNP, and that “Holness, at least, had courage to tell us that there would be difficult times ahead”.
He said that the PNP Government was failing “all by itself”, and was unable to look at the JLP to blame for the current situation.
“They certainly can’t look at me and quarrel with me,” he said.
