MOCHO, Clarendon — Glenmuir High’s defence of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition will continue at least into the Inter-Zone round after they achieved qualification yesterday without kicking a ball.

A win by former champions Garvey Maceo High, 2-0, over Bustamante High in their rescheduled first round Zone M home game, meant the winners at Garvey Maceo as well as Glenmuir High, progressed to the next round of the competition.

Christiana High also progressed with a 1-0 win over Holmwood Technical in their rescheduled first round game as 13 schools have now locked up qualification to the Inter-zone round.

Yesterday’s threesome joins the other qualifiers — Manchester High and Clarendon College — who have both secured Ben Francis Knockout berths, while eight other schools have booked places in the Inter-Zone round — Muschett High, St Elizabeth Technical High, Munro College, Marcus Garvey Technical, Cedric Titus High, Port Antonio High, and Paul Bogle High.

Yesterday only a win by Bustamante High could prevent both schools from advancing, but their loss left them on three points, and even with two games to play, cannot catch Glenmuir High who are on 10 points with a game to play and a chance to return to the Ben Francis KO, and Garvey Maceo, who completed their schedule with 11 points.

Christiana High clinched their place with two games to go, as they raced to 16 points at the top of Zone G, slowing down Holmwood’s march and should also secure zone honours.

Holmwood are not out of the race, however, but they are now in a battle with Spalding High for the other place. The Dave Anderson-coached Holmwood are on 11 points, two more than Spalding, both with two games to go.

The three-way battle for the two automatic places in Zone N will continue today with leaders Central High and Kemps Hill meeting in a top-of-the-zone clash at Kemps Hill, while Vere Technical will seek to rebound from their loss on Saturday to Central when they take on Foga Road.
