Green Pond shock CC to advance to inter-zone round
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Green Pond High School of St James and Muschett High of Wakefield, Trelawny are through to the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition for the first time in their history, after contrasting results in yesterday’s return-round games.
A total of eight schools made progress as 19 of the 32 places in the Inter-zone round have now been filled with one full round of games still to come, plus three rescheduled games to be played this afternoon.
Dinthill Technical and Port Antonio snatched Ben Francis KO spots as well by winning their respective zones.
Dinthill beat Charlemont 3-0 to move to an unassailable 16 points in Zone K, while Port Antonio were 4-0 winners over Happy Grove to top Zone L as Christopher Smith scored twice.
Kemps Hill could make it back-to-back trips to the Ben Francis KO today if they can beat Foga Road in their rescheduled Zone N game.
Yesterday at Jarrett Park, Green Pond shocked former champions Cornwall College 3-1 in a Zone A game that avenged a first-round loss, and advanced along with St James, who edged Maldon 3-2.
Green Pond made full use of two gifts from the Cornwall College goalkeeper as Kashief Brown scored twice to take his tally for the season to nine goals, while both Green Pond and St James High moved to 18 points and will meet on Saturday for the Ben Francis KO spot.
Cornwall College, who were losing their third game this season and are left on 15 points, if they cannot get in as one of the best third-placed teams, would have missed the Inter-Zone round for the second time in four seasons.
Muschett High drew 0-0 with Spot Valley to move to 16 points at the top of Zone C, while Spot Valley and William Knibb Memorial, who beat Holland High 3-0, are level on 13 points and will face each other on Saturday when the other place will be decided.
Godfrey Stewart and Grange Hill played out a 0-0 draw in Sav-la-Mar, but advanced from Zone D after last season’s semi-finalists Mannings failed to live up to pre-season expectations and yesterday’s loss to Black River eliminated them from Inter-zone considerations.
St Mary Technical got the point they needed from their game against Brimmervale to snatch their place from Zone J, while the losers will have another chance, come Saturday, to join them, needing only a point themselves.
Marcus Garvey Technical dropped points for the first time this season after they were held 1-1 at Brown’s Town in Zone I, but edged back in front of Cedric Titus on 22 points as they race for zone honours.
The race for both places in Zone B is as tight as ever after Rusea’s High and Frome scored impressive wins yesterday. Frome Technical hammered Cambridge High 5-0 to retake the lead with 16 points, but have completed their schedule.
Rusea’s blanked Irwin High 3-0 to move into second place with 15 points, while Green Island, who were idle, are on 14 points and will meet Irwin on Saturday in their final game.
