13 places up for grabs

daCosta Cup

MONTEGO BAY, St James — A nail-biting, nerve-wracking day is in store for today’s final set of scheduled matches in the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition, as 20 schools take a shot at the 13 remaining spots for the Inter-zone round.

Nineteen teams already have a lock on their places in the next round, including six that have won their zones and will contest the Ben Francis knockout that kicks off next Wednesday.

To add to the drama that is set to unfold are four games where the results will directly affect the fates of the teams taking part, with one team needing only a draw to advance while eliminating the other.

Thirty-two games are scheduled for today and at the end there is a possibility that two Inter-zone places will still be up for grabs; St Thomas Technical need only a point to secure their place from Zone O, but will not play until Monday and depending on the results from the competitive Zone G, the second spot could still be open when Holmwood Technical meet Alston in a rescheduled game on Monday.

Christiana High, who have already secured their Inter-zone spot, could wrap up the Ben Francis KO spot with just a point from their game against a desperate Holmwood, who have not advanced past the first round since the 2007 campaign.

A draw would not end the road for Holmwood, but Spalding could sneak into the next round with a win over Knox, forcing Holmwood to win big against Alston on Monday.

It will be winners take all in the Zone C clash at Martha Brae between home team William Knibb Memorial and Spot Valley, who are tied on 13 points, behind Muschett High, who are already sure of their place with 16 points.

Spot Valley need only a draw to advance on goal difference, which would give Muschett High a place in the Ben Francis KO.

A point would be sufficient for B B Coke, who had beaten Bellefield 3-0 in the first round in their Zone F clash to join Manchester High, who have won the zone already with eight wins in a row.

St Mary High must repeat their first round win over Brimmervale High if they are to advance along with Zone J winners St Mary Technical for a fourth straight year. A point would be enough for Brimmervale, who are in second place on 17 points, two more than St Mary High on 15.

Titchfield had beaten Happy Grove 2-1 in their first round meeting and another win today would see them take the second place in Zone L, behind winners Port Antonio.

Titchfield and Happy Grove are tied on 12 points, but Happy Grove have the edge on goal difference and a draw would benefit them. YESTERDAY’S RESULTGAMES FOR TODAY
