My Kingston – Christopher Eldemire
What is your earliest memory of Kingston?
My first distinctive memory of Kingston is, as a child, having picnics on Sunday afternoons with my family at Hope Gardens. I remember looking at the birds and taking in nature. It was always something I looked forward to.
What was your most memorable meal in Kingston?
Home-made stewed peas with pig’s tail and white rice made by my grandmother Kay Eldemire.
What would be your recommendations as places of interest to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
A must-see place would have to be Strawberry Hill — that panoramic view of the mountains cannot be missed. Then I’d suggest travelling up into the Blue Mountains.
They could complete their Kingston travels with a trip to Lime Cay.
Where are your favourite chill spots on the island?
Definitely Jo Jo’s Jerk Pit on Waterloo Roa, as well as a farmhouse that my father has in Westmoreland — I will take the drive down and chill there. A river runs through the property and just listening to the flowing water is something spectacular.
What is your beverage of choice?
J Wray and Nephew white rum and ginger ale.
What cologne are you splashing?
Tom Ford Noir.
Share the title of the last book you read.
As A Man Thinketh by James Allen.
What was the last piece of music you listened that impressed you?
Bob Marley has always been a favourite of mine. Whenever I’m feeling a bit down, Redemption Song has always stirred my soul in a different way.
What was your last major splurge?
I bought a leather backpack from Coach, which was something I always wanted, so my credit card paid heftily.
Share favourite places in your black book.
In Barbados, my favourite spot in St James is the Lime Grove which is the mall where all the high-end stores are. In Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain is the main spot; I usually go for Carnival. Vancouver in Canada is a beautiful spot. I love Manhattan in New York for shopping. In Europe, definitely Central London, where all the buzz is. In the United States, it would be Houston, Texas where my family is, and South Beach in Florida.
Who is your style idol?
Tom Ford. I love his sense of style and his new eyewear collection is off the chain.
You’re in the eyewear business. What are your favourite designer frames?
It would be the French designer Jean Francois Rey. He has a beautiful line. I’m not about major brands like Chanel or Bvlgari. Rey is a designer who takes time out to craft a product that is one-of-a-kind and of exquisite architectural quality. I’m also a fan of Lindbergh, which is out of Denmark, and what I’m wearing. You can get the eyewear bespoke to your liking. And I also like a British designer, Tom Davis, which can be designed from scratch in-house at Eye Q.
What’s next for you at Eye Q Optical?
I’m angling to take over the optical market. I don’t think eyewear is appreciated as much. We definitely want to stage the product on the runway and let people realise it is now a fashion piece and an accessory.
You have an obvious passion for design. Does this extend beyond eyewear?
I’m a big fan of architecture, particularly in Jamaica. Just strolling downtown Kingston and looking at the older buildings gives me a deeper appreciation. I also enjoy practising a little interior decorating from time to time.
Any decorating projects you are currently working on?
I assist friends with projects. Recently a friend of mine got an apartment and asked for my help. We ordered items from IKEA and I went to work.
What is your philosophy?
Live life to the fullest. Laugh and have fun.
