Warren to ‘Weir’ different hat at Bell-Ziadie football fiesta
FANS can expect dozens of Jamaica’s sporting stars to parade their football prowess at the 27th staging of the Bell-Ziadie Memorial celebrity charity event today at the Winchester Park field at St George’s College.
The festival of football, presented by Masters and Celebrities in association with mobile technology company Digicel, will feature teams of former football players, other current and past sport personalities, a St George’s Invitational XI, sponsors and media.
The Heroes’ Day event is held in memory of Winthorpe ‘Jackie’ Bell and Dennis Ziadie and will run from midday to 6:00 pm.
Bell and Ziadie, two of the country’s football icons, died in a motor vehicle accident in Guadalajara, Mexico, in June 1986 after watching the Brazil versus France World Cup quarter-final game.
Children under 12 years old are allowed free entry to the venue, while adults will be asked to pay $500 per person.
Speaking during the recent launch at the Cuddy’z Sports Bar, Clive ‘Busy’ Campbell, the lead organiser of the Bell-Ziadie Memorial, said funds raised will aid basic schools across the island.
He said he has received confirmation from former national standouts such as Theodore Whitmore, Walter Boyd, Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis, Hector Wright, Gregory Messam, Ricardo ‘Bibi’ Gardner, Warren Barrett, and Aaron Lawrence.
Jamaica’s 200-metre silver medallist at the 2013 IAAF World Championship in Moscow, Warren Weir, former West Indies left-handed batsman Wavell Hinds, legendary regional fast bowler Courtney Walsh, and dancehall artiste Aidonia (given name Sheldon Lawrence) are also set to participate.
Former national representative Allan ‘Skill’ Cole, ex-FIFA referee Clive Wright and St George’s College Old Boy Danny Simpson are the honorees this year.
Aside from Digicel, other sponsors include Tru-Juice, Burger King, Puma, Jamaica Observer, KLAS ESPN Sports FM 89, RJR Group, PetroJam, Cuddy’z, Coca-Cola, WATA, Malta and Bob Marley Museum.
