Wolmer’s produce sentimental victory, Trinity clipped
DEFENDING Walker Cup Champions, Wolmer’s Boys, registered an emotional 4-0 Walker Cup thrashing of Spanish Town High in the second game of the Constant Spring double-header.
The boys from Heroes’ Circle added a black armband to their usual maroon and gold attire. This was to show support for teammate Demar Rose, as his mother passed away on Wednesday. They looked extremely dangerous whenever they had possession. It took only 18 minutes for the in-form Jordan James to skilfully run past the Spanish Town defence and slot home his ninth goal of the season.
The torment continued when Demar Rose doubled their lead in the 62nd minute with a header.
Emotions were evident in his celebration as he lifted a number 11 jersey designed with her picture. The torment of Spanish Town High became clear as they were being pinned inside their own half for extended stints of play. The dilemma got worse as Spanish Town’s Lloyd Duhaney got sent off after picking up a second yellow card.
The pressure paid off as the experienced Jaheel Hyde contributed a double to end the hopes of the St Catherine-based school.
The first of his brace was executed with great expertise, as he cleverly got by their defence to slot a right-footed effort in the far corner. His second goal was of a different nature, with the sprint hurdler hitting the back of the net from a superb long-range effort on his preferred left foot.
Coach Ludlow Bernard congratulated his team on a great game in memory of Farrah Smith, the mother of Rose who died in childbirth. The champions look a serious threat for all titles with this added motivation.
Holy Trinity, meanwhile, turned in a commendable performance despite being eliminated 2-1 by Charlie Smith.
Charlie Smith, the 2011 Manning Cup finalists went ahead in the 31st minute as a series of short passes got them in the penalty area when Bebeto McDonald completed the move as he fired home. Holy Trinity were determined in play and pressured the Jerome Waite team for an equaliser. Their efforts paid off in the 52nd minute as Charlie Smith gave up a free kick at the edge of the 18-yard box. Shamar Stephenson cleverly turned in the ball at the near post. Their celebration, however, was short-lived as Shamar Pryce blasted a zinger in the top corner to leave the goalkeeper with no chance.
Charlie Smith held out Holy Trinity for the rest of play to grant Holy Trinity their first loss of the season. Coach Jerome Waite commended Holy Trinity for a hard-fought match and applauded his team for overcoming the challenge.
The second set of quarter finals scheduled for Saturday was postponed as intense rain prevented play.
They are set to take place today as Hydel look to test St George’s College in a replay of last year’s final. Jamaica College will aim to maintain their 100 per cent win record as they tackle Excelsior in the second encounter at Constant Spring.
