Defending champs post wins in Michael Holding Masters Cricket
Joint defending champions South St Elizabeth and Long Island Masters won their first match on Saturday in the Michael Holding Masters Cricket Competition at Manley Horne Cricket Ground and Treasure Beach Sports Ground, respectively.
South St Elizabeth defeated Westmoreland (who are playing as an overseas-based team) by 50 runs after making 236 for 5 in their 35 overs with Wayne Billings, 72, Paul Broomfield, 46, contributing the most runs, while Paul Campbell bagged 2 for 44 in seven overs. Westmoreland replied with 186 for 8 in their 35 overs. The bulk of the wickets went to Gary Bromfield, 3-24, Lennox Simpson, 3-45, and Paul Bromfield, 2 for 21.
Long Island, on the other hand, got the better of new-comer Treasure Beach by 41 runs. Long Island won the toss and made 214 for 7 on the back of Wayne Cuff’s 39 and Delroy Morang, 29. The wickets went to Valtie Cranston, 2 for 28, and Wayne Lee, 2 for 33. Treasure Beach were all out for 173. Arnett Thompson top scored with 52, while Norris Smith contributed to 32. David Josephs, 3 for 16, and Cliff Roye, 2 for 6, got the most wickets.
The first century of the competition was made by Orville Pennant of Ultimate Masters, who joined forces with Cecil Lewis, 94, to post 237 for 1 in 34 overs to defeat Atlanta Masters by nine wickets at Ultimate Cricket in St Ann.
The lone wicket went to Godfrey Simms. Atlanta, who had batted first, made 233 for 6 with Lynden Johnson, 82, and Richard Hoilett, 51, being the main run getters. Anthony Watson and Leslie Talbert took two wickets each.
Patron Michael Holding was on hand to see Melbourne lose to Brooklyn Masters by 45 runs at Melbourne Oval in Kingston. Brooklyn posted 190 for 6 in 35 overs. Melbourne replied with 145 all out on the back of Courtney Walsh, who top scored with 42. Lascelles Davis took all of 6 wickets for 33 runs in seven overs.
Many-time winners New York Masters beat Montego Bay by 70 runs at Barnett Oval in St James. New York made 217 for 8, while Montego bay replied with 147 for 7.
Kingston looked set to win their first match but lost the plot and the game to Caribbean Masters by seven runs in the penultimate overs. Caribbean made 186 for 9 to Kingston’s 179 all out.
Manchester and Clarendon lost to two overseas-based teams in Queens Masters and Florida Masters, respectively. Manchester lost by 66 runs after making 146 for 7 in reply to Queens’ 212 for 4. Florida won by one wicket after making 193-9 in reply to Clarendon’s 192 all out.
