IF there is any doubt that tomorrow’s Drift Tuner Night (DTN) at ATL Bogue Centre in Montego Bay was going to be a run-of-the-mill experience, remove that notion.

According to Team Slide Life’s Adam Gomes, co-organiser of the event, this is brand new.

“DTN will be the first ever official Jamaican drift event,” Gomes told Auto.

Slide Life was founded last year, with racer Jordan Powell, to run the sixth round of the national dexterity championship. And according to Gomes, the idea came from watching the crowd response. He said they noticed the crowd’s excitement whenever the rear-wheel-drive cars took to the course.

For 2013, they decided to expand beyond dexterities and just have a straight drift competition. To this, they approached the Jamaica Millennium Motor Club (JMMC) for sanctioning with the necessary framework for the event. DTN will use rules from the North American FormulaDRIFT series and see competitors drift a track layout for the chance at a $50,000-top prize.

“Drivers are by invitation only and we’ve formed a committee to choose the best 15. They will be judged in five categories such as drift angle, speed, style/finesse, car control, to name a few during competition,” he explained.

The celebrity judge line-up is a who’s who in motorsport, Doug Gore, Richard Rerrie and Jeffrey Panton.

“I bring the business side of things while Jordan brings his technical know-how and connections within the motorsports community,” said Gomes.

Gomes’ business acumen brings Kingston’s top car club Skunk Nation to the western end of the island for the first time for a full display of modified rides.

“They wanted to come to Montego Bay due to huge demand from their fans and we felt this was a great chance to blend those who love cars and Motorsports lovers together,” Gomes said.

Slide Life will donate 10 per cent of the event’s proceeds to the We Care For Cornwall Regional Hospital Foundation.
