Hitmaker guided by his name
KINGSTON-based dancehall artiste Hitmaker is carving out a reputation as a consistent force in the dancehall business. He is playing dual roles as producer and as artiste.
He first gained attention with his 2009 single, No Friend No De Again and recently generated a buzz with Da Look Deh on the popular Seduction rhythm.
“The response has been phenomenal so far. That’s why we shot a video for the single which has just been released,” Hitmaker said.
Hitmaker, 28, whose given name is Kedon Whyte, started his career at 16. He grew up in Hughenden, St Andrew, and attended Clan Carthy Primary School before moving on to Donald Quarrie High School in Kingston.
He did a one-year crash course in the performing arts at the Excelsior Community College. After leaving college, he scored in 2009 with No Friend No Deh Again on his own Hitmaker Muzik label.
Last year he released the Paypa Chaser rhythm with the single Show Me featuring Konshens and himself.
“I went to the USA and did a lot of promotions in seven states over there for Paypa Chaser and made several new contacts,” he said.
This year, he began to focus more on the artiste side of his career with the release of two music videos, Stamina and Tell Yu Bout Life.
“Right now, I just want to keep making a steady stream of hits, I have to live up to my name,” he said.
