Iyunda is no sell-out
Thanks to stalwarts Linton Kwesi Johnson and Mutabaruka, as well as contemporary artistes Cherry Natural and Nomadzz, dub poetry has been accepted by the mainstream.
Iyunda is looking to maintain that momentum with his new song, Dem Sell Out, done on the popular Angola beat.
The dub poet/chanter, whose real name is Courtney Robinson, says he brings uplifting dialogue to the table.
“I know I have inspirational messages for the people. Life is the highest and this is what I write about, this is the message I’m spreading,” he said in a recent interview.
A founding member of the poetry group, Tuff Tuff Triangle, Iyunda says his aim is to “chant down negativity.” He has performed throughout the Caribbean, in Europe, the United States, Central America and Canada.
Early this year, he released the song Yaad Man Skank which features Dexta Malawi, a graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.
The track attempts to revive the ‘skank’, a dance style popular in Jamaica during the 1960s and 1970s.
It was recorded by engineer Kimani Dodd, nephew of legendary music producer Clement Dodd.
