MP wants bank charges reviewed by Parliament
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Government backbencher Fitz Jackson tabled a motion in the House of Representatives, Tuesday, asking that the House request a report from the Bank of Jamaica on commercial bank and credit union fees and charges.
Jackson wants the BOJ report within 60 days, providing information on fees and charges as at October 31 and for it to be forwarded to the House’s Economy and Production Committee for review.
His motion wants the committee to commence, within 45 days, an evaluation of the report, and submit their recommendations on steps to ensure that the fees are not exorbitant, oppressive or serve as an impediment to national development and the improved quality for the more vulnerable in the society.
However, it unlikely that Jackson’s timelines can be met as there is no indication when the motion will be debated in the House, or whether it will be passed.
