Roe opens today
Get your chopsticks ready for an exceptional sushi experience at the just-opened Japanese restaurant, Roe. Found in the happening Sovereign North, the restaurant which is run by the husband-and-wife pair of Kaz and Michiko Asonuma — who previously operated Restaurant Japan at the former Hilton Hotel — and partly owned by fitness consultant Selena Deleon is a chic slice of metropolitan dining space designed by Theresa Lindo.
“We were looking to introduce an outlet to supply healthy food alternatives and we got in touch with them [the Asonumas],” Deleon, who runs the Core Fitness Studio next door to Roe, informed us at the eatery’s soft opening Tuesday night. “We wanted to start a movement and education about eating healthier,” she added.
To this end, Roe’s menu options are naturally low-calorie and also include protein shakes and connoisseur imported loose-leaf teas (available in iced and cocktail options).
The expansive sushi menu, which boasts several tuna and salmon items, also features a number of signature dishes such as the Kanisu Roll, the ‘Core Skinny’ and ‘Core Fitness Dressing’. Roe’s price point runs from $500 for a slim tuna roll to $2,200 for a miso blackened cod.
Deleon is full of praise for her Japanese partners, both of whom she trumpets as officially introducing sushi to The Rock’s food landscape with their former restaurant. “They were the founders who brought sushi to the mainstream here and Kaz, as the former Japanese Ambassador here, has been keen about educating people about Japanese food and culture.”
