Venus and Serena Williams to participate in children’s free clinic today
ST JAMES, Jamaica – Multiple Grand Slam title winners and tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams will Thursday participate in a clinic for students at The Tryall Club in Montego Bay, St James.
Between 40 and 50 children from Hanover, St James and other parishes will get the chance to participate in the clinic through a partnership with Tennis Jamaica.
A recent release from The Tryall Club said the children, who are between the ages of five and 17, are at different levels and come from different “social and economic backgrounds”.
Richard Ferdinand, Director of Tennis at The Tryall Club and convenor of Tryall’s annual summer camp is elated about the sisters’ involvement and believes it will help to promote social development through the sport.
“Each year we have tennis stars and pros come to The Club and give of their time,” he said. “The Williams sisters are current champions that the students can easily identify with and we hope that by interacting with them, the students will be even more motivated to excel in the sport.”
The Williams sisters are two professional American tennis players. Serena is a seventeen-time Grand Slam title winner with a current WTA ranking of number one in the world (singles), while Venus is a seven-time Grand Slam title winner, with a current WTA ranking of number 48 in the world (singles).
In 2002, after the French Open, Venus and Serena Williams were ranked No 1 and 2 respectively. During the 2010 French Open, they became the co-world No1 players in women’s doubles, in addition to holding the top two positions in singles tennis as well, the release said.
The initiative is being hosted in collaboration with the National Commercial Bank (NCB).
