All for peace
OVER the last 20 years, Spanish Town has earned a reputation as one of Jamaica’s most violent areas. But Just For Peace International, an organisation based in the old capital, has brought a positive vibe to the historic town.
Founded six years ago by journalist Eugene Pitter, it includes over 40 budding artistes from Spanish Town. The group is getting ready to release its second album.
According to Pitter, the focus is on pushing reconciliation through conscious content.
“Its four main objectives are to promote peace, love, unity, and discipline in schools,” Pitter told the Jamaica Observer.
One of Just For Peace International’s first projects was its self-titled debut album, an 18-track set which came out three years ago.
Pitter says the follow-up is almost complete.
“A number of the artistes have their songs recorded already. Is just for us now to do a compilation.”
The Just For Peace International programme involves school tours and performances at charity events. There have been concerts at about 20 high schools, including St Jago, Dinthill and Hydel.
Their activities have got the attention of prominent figures including Governor General Sir Patrick Allen.
“The organisation Just For Peace International is to be commended for its initiative to harness the talents of our young people, for the promotion of peace, discipline, love, and reconciliation,” the Governor General said in a statement.
Some of the artistes featured on the school and charity events have songs on the forthcoming compilation. They include Dee Gan (Garfield Mudie), a deejay who has been with Just For Peace International since its inception. He has one song released to date titled Inna Circles.
O’Neil Nembhard, a singjay who is also the group’s production manager, is known as O-Frass. He has two singles out, OK and Deep In Love.
Singjay Prominent (Akeem Francis) has been with Just For Peace International for two years. He has released the song OK OK. Pitter points out that Just For Peace is not all about recording artistes.
“We have some dance groups. Colour Code Dancers from Rivoli Avenue, Clock Work Dancers from William Street, Revolution Dancers, Dancy Dancy Squad, and Most Wanted,” he said.
The group plans to perform at Golden Age homes during the Christmas season.
