Santa Cruz store clerk shot in attempted robbery
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – A clerk from a business place in Santa Cruz was shot and injured during an attempted robbery on Monday.
The St Elizabeth police reported that the clerk was on his way to the bank when he was accosted by a gunman who shot him in the left shoulder. The gunman then attempted to rob the clerk of cash and cheques, but only managed to get away with a bag of groceries.
The gunman reportedly escaped in a car with the plates removed.
The injured clerk was admitted to hospital in stable condition.
Meanwhile the police are urging business people to be careful when making large monetary transactions.
“We want to appeal yet again to business people that when you have to move cash do so with great care,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Lanford Salmon who heads anti-crime operations in St Elizabeth told OBSERVER ONLINE.
Salmon emphasised that the police were ready and willing to provide escort services for people carrying large sums to and from the bank “free of cost” once they are informed ahead of time.
