Holness names Nigel Clarke eighth senator, swearing in Thursday
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Dr Nigel Clarke, Chief Operating Officer of the Musson Group and the Chief Executive Officer of one of its principal Jamaican subsidiaries, Facey Commodity Company Limited, has been named as the eighth Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Senator.
The party is expected to make the announcement in release to the press this afternoon.
Dr Clarke will join principal of Jamaica College, Ruel Reid, as the two new members of the Opposition in the Senate replacing former Senators Arthur Williams and Dr Christopher Tufton.
They will be sworn in at Gordon House on Thursday morning.
The announcement follows Monday’s decision by the Supreme Court not to allow a motion from Senator Williams for an injunction against Opposition Leader, Andrew Holness, naming persons to fill the two vacant positions.
Dr Clarke worked as an Equity Derivatives Trader at Goldman Sachs in London, England. He is a Director of the Bank of Jamaica, Chairman of both the National Youth Orchestra of Jamaica and also, the HEART Trust, and a former Vice President of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica and a former director of the National Commercial Bank (Jamaica) Limited, Desnoes & Geddes Limited and Jamaica Broilers Limited.
He holds a BSc in Mathematics from the University of the West Indies, as well as a M Sc from Oxford University and a D Phil from Oxford University of the United Kingdom, in Numerical Analysis. In his academic career he has been Jamaica Independence Scholar (University of the West Indies) and Commonwealth Scholar and Rhodes Scholar (Oxford University).
