MBCC stages successful Wine, Food and Fashion expo
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The Montego Bay Community College (MBCC) staged a successfully Wine, Food and Fashion Expo executed by the staff and students of the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism and Creative Studies at the school’s auditorium last Friday.
The event was packed with a variety of offerings, including fruit and vegetable carvings, ice carving, wedding cake show, fashion show, international cuisine and cross cultural concepts that included representation from the Indian and African cultures.
General manager of Round Hill Hotel and Villas Omar Robinson shared his wealth of industry knowledge and experience with the eager patrons during the event. He commended the college for its insight for hosting the expo
The well-attended event kept the attention of patrons for the most part.
Delectable foods from European, Spanish, Caribbean and Asian cuisines tantalised the taste buds of the food enthusiasts, while the showmanship of the school’s budding culinary artists made the demonstrations even more exciting.
The fashion shows, however, were the toast of the event, as onlookers applauded the creativity and pizazz of the fashion and design students. These designs were cutting-edge and evoked the enthusiastic screams of the patrons. The lines ranged from creative pieces to evening wear and wedding gowns, and one could even mistake the students for professionals already in the field.
“This execution by the faculty is testimony that the institution is top notch and maintains high standards. This event grows in creativity and magnitude every year as the college already begins to look to the future as to how it will continue to wow patrons,” said Casana Spence, associate dean — Continuing Education and Workforce Development at Montego Bay Community College.
The programmes that were represented at the event were bachelor’s and associate degrees in hospitality and tourism management and the associate degree in culinary arts, Spence said, adding that they are designed to train persons for the hospitality sector in various areas, including food and beverage management, accommodations and travel and tourism.
Carol Walters, Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism and Creative Studies expressed delight at the expo.
“I am very pleased with the energy and enthusiasm displayed by the students and the amount of hard work they all put into the planning and execution of the various aspects of the expo. The standards, as usual, were very high,” she told the Observer West.
