Bullets, ballers score big wins in women’s basketball league
DEFENDING champions Waulgrovians Bullets and Unique Ballers registered convincing wins over their opponents in the 2013/2014 Jamaica Basketball Association (JABA) Women’s League played at the Leila Robinson Courts last Sunday.
The Bullets were also scoring their third win from as many games, while it was the first win from two games for the Ballers from the parish of Trelawny. They had been beaten by Bullets in the opening match of the season 55-47.
Bullets, coached by Marlon Nattie, defeated Lady Panthers, coached by Donald Bimmer 78-27 points. Bullets went into a commanding 39-8 points at half-time interval. For the winners, captain Oberon Pitterson-Nattie got 18 points and Angeline Latouche with 14 points, while Shastalee Smith got 12 points for the losers.
Also on Sunday, the Everton Traverse-coached Ballers made easy work of the young Waulgrovians Clippets, coached by Nattie by scoring a convincing 72-15 point win. The Ballers took a clear 38-7 lead at the break for the interval.
The principal scorers for the winners were Lorreta Gordon with 24 points and Stacy-Ann Facey with 11 points, while Keisha Wallace got seven points for the losers.
In another game played last Saturday, Homstead Cougars chalked up their second win from two starts, beating Lady Panthers 47-36 points after securing a 26-22 lead at half-time.
For the Cougars coached by Richard Pollack Sasha Dixon got 19 points and six rebounds, and Melissa Farquharson scored 19 points and had seven rebounds, while Naviene Powell-Bonner had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Sashalee Smith nine points for the losers.
The lone game last Thursday saw the Cougars whipping Clippets 63-16 points. The winners gained a 30-4 points lead at the half-time break. Dixon had a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds, Melissa Farquharson 16 points and Tracy-Ann Robinson with 14 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars. No player from the Clippets got into double figures.
Action continues in the Women’s League tomorrow (Thursday, December 4) with Braves Smilers going up against Unique Ballers, beginning at 7:00 pm.
