Manchester celebrates 199 years
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The parish of Manchester in Jamaica turns 199 years old tomorrow Friday December 13.
To mark the occasion, the Brooks Park Committee under the patronage of Mayor Brenda Ramsey and Custos Sally Porteous will be hosting a free gospel concert on Sunday, December 15, at Brooks Park in the capital town Mandeville. The show is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
Gospel artistes Omari and Jermaine Edwards are headliners for the event.
Manchester, one of the newest parishes on the island was created on December 13, 1814, from parts of adjoining parishes St Elizabeth, Clarendon and Vere. It was named after the Duke of Manchester, who was the then governor of the island. The parish of Vere was assimilated into Clarendon.
