Baffert colt could be Derby bound after win by 15
ARCADIA, California (AP) — Bob Baffert-trained Bayern won the US$58,000 feature race at Santa Anita on Thursday last in a runaway 15-length victory that could have the three-year-old pointed toward the Kentucky Derby.
Jockey Gary Stevens said the heavily favoured Bayern “exploded” when urged at the eighth pole in the mile feature.
Baffert, who saddled the last of his three Kentucky Derby winners in 2002, said Bayern’s performance is the kind that “gets your hopes up” but wants to make sure the colt gets plenty of rest after the romp.
