My Hanover
What’s your earliest memory of Hanover?
My earliest memory was driving back in my dad’s pick-up from Savanna-la-Mar. It broke down at Tryall. I said: “Dad, it’s pretty nice here… can we move?”
What was the most memorable meal you have enjoyed in Hanover?
My most memorable meal was a dinner with friends at Karma Bay villa, Tryall. Great meal, glasses of wine, full moon. Lots of laughs! Nothing better.
What would your recommendations be to a visitor to Hanover?
Tryall and Round Hill are of course fantastic places to stay and have meals. Ralph Lauren, Donovan Bailey and the Champ Lennox Lewis live or play often in Hanover.
What is your preferred beverage of choice?
I stick to my roots! Appleton V/X and Coke.
Share the title of the last book you read.
The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma. I gave it to my former boss Michael Downey (now the head of the English Tennis Federation). He was on a flight to Vancouver and a woman asked him why he was reading the book. They got married in December.
What’s on your iPod or car stereo playlist?
Chronixx is my latest but I love an eclectic mix of music. The Clash, Patsy Cline, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, URoy, Afrika Bambaataa.
What cologne are you splashing?
Polo Blue by Ralph Lauren. I love the fresh, crisp scent. It reminds me of the sea, and Mr Lauren has a place in Jamaica. I always support Jamaican products or friends of Jamaica.
Share some favourite places in your black book.
I love everywhere in Jamaica — Port Antonio, Blue Lagoon Villas, Jakes, Strawberry Hill, Round Hill and Tryall Club. Internationally, of course Italy, Siena is magical; Cannes in France; Mallorca in Spain, I visited Nadal at his house. He’s the most sincere guy you’ll ever meet.
As tournament director of the Rogers Cup in Toronto, detail what your role is.
Pray it never rains! Rain makes a mess of the tournament, from ticket sales to broadcast. We have the best fans in the world. The Rogers Cup is the third oldest tournament in the world and largest one-week tennis event in the world. People don’t realise how big it is!
You’ve facilitated trips for 2013 Wimbledon female champ Marion Bartoli and previous Wimbledon champs Venus and Serena Williams here. What kind of sporting linkages do you hope to establish with Jamaica?
I am bringing down former world number one Jim Courier for an exhibition April 26 at Tryall Club. We have never had a world number one do an exhibition in Jamaica. I love Jamaica, I just want people to see how beautiful our people are and that they will share the message. Usain Bolt took time out of his schedule to meet Marion Bartoli. We are not just beaches but great people.
Are there any new projects you’re working on that you can clue us in on?
I am trying to develop a tennis centre in Jamaica that promotes tourism and local talent. I want to give children a chance to see tennis as a vehicle for a better life. It will happen. I am just looking for the right partners.
Which athlete do you most admire?
Athletes who give back. Venus, Serena and Marion Bartoli all have a social conscience and give back so much!
How would you rate yourself as a tennis player?
I was much better 20 years ago.
When last did you have a good laugh?
Marion Bartoli and I fell in the pool at the Sugar Cane Ball! Tuxedo, dress and all. We both had a great laugh!
When last did you have a good cry?
When I realised my cellphone was in my tuxedo after getting out of the pool!
What is your philosophy?
Encourage everyone around you to be better. That is what life is all about. Friends, family, children… if they are all getting better because of you, that’s success.
