Perfect Neighbour back in town
LAST year’s Derby and St Leger winner Perfect Neighbour made a fine re-entry to the racetrack when he won an Open Allowance race for three-year-olds and upward over 1,600 metres at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The four-year-old dark bay colt out of Natural Selection-Desperate Housewife by Ghost Ransom, was returning to the races for the first time after being narrowly beaten by Typewriter in the Superstakes last November.
He got a clean break and was held off the pace by jockey Dick Cardenas before making his move. He was, however, in a brief tussle with Pete’sWildOne (Omar Walker up) coming into the homestretch before pulling away from his rivals.
Perfect Neighbour covered the distance in a respectable time of 1:38.4 minutes, winning by one-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of Military Move (Paul Francis), with The Guv (Aaron Chatrie) back in third.
Meanwhile, Insane Bolt, also ridden by Cardenas, made a positive return from a two-month break when he won the third event by one-and-a-quarter lengths in a time of 1:27.3 minutes for 1,400 metres.
The three-year-old bay gelding out of Shuffling Maddnes-Golden Olympio by Olympio, had to put in a strong stretch run to get by the highly touted Boy Wonder (Omar Walker), with Exclusive Prince (Holanda Butler) finishing third.
Trainer Wayne DaCosta, who saddled both horses, gave his thoughts on their performances.
“Insane Bolt ran workman-like, he didn’t get a good draw and was off the pace, but when he needed to run, he responded well. I thought it was a very encouraging performance, even though he looked like he was tiring at the last furlong.
“Perfect Neighbour ran as expected, he was a bit close to the pace and, unlike recently, he is turning the page to show that he is the real big man in town now,” said the champion trainer.
Cobra, at odds of 18-1, was an upset winner in the day’s feature race, the Mortimer ‘Morty’ Heron Memorial Cup for three-year-olds and upward over 1,820 metres. Cobra, ridden by Larris Allen, who is back riding in Jamaica, won by a short head over Sterling Gold (Paul Francis) in a driving finish. Sundown (Dane Nelson) was third in the event.
Champion apprentice Shamaree Muir, ridding Gran Corazon in the sixth event, was hindered and consequently fell from his mount, while in the same race, jockey Paul Francis was caught in the gate. Francis was said to be fine, but Muir was reported to be in stable condition with a mild concussion. He was unable to ride for the remainder of the meet.
