EDWIN Allen, as expected, retained the girls’ title, while St Jago High dethroned Hydel Group of Schools to win the boys’ title as the 2014 Tropical Blue Spring Water Central Athletic Championships concluded in spectacular fashion yesterday at Kirkvine Sports Club in Manchester.

After 40 events, with only the 4x400m relays to go, Edwin Allen had tallied 351 points, some 105 points better than second-placed Holmwood Technical (245.5), who were being closely policed by the rising Hydel (242.5), just three points back in third. Vere Technical (202) and Manchester High (173) rounded out the top five among the girls.

St Jago, on 239, had established a massive 122-point lead over Edwin Allen (117) after 30 finals in the boys’ category. At press time, the top five was complete by Holmwood (89), Hydel (83.5) and Claude McKay High (79).

Meanwhile, young Emily Coley brought the curtains down on the event with a masterful performance in the girls’ 3,000m open. The 13-year-old Hydel athlete topped the field in 10.56.72 minutes. Holmwood’s Lisa Buchanan (11.01.30) and Jeima Davis (11.05.22) of Edwin Allen were second and third, respectively.

Earlier in the day, Shanette Allison of Holmwood established a new meet record in the girls’ Class Three 80m hurdles to erase the previous mark set by Janieve Russell in 2009.

Hydel’s Ashanti Moore equalled the Class Four 200m record when she finished ahead of St Jago’s Joanne Reid (25.45) and Kishawna Wallace (26.26) of Holmwood Technical in 25.25 seconds.

Other big performances on the day came from Edwin Allen’s Patrice Moody, who upset St Jago’s Kimone Shaw (24.77) to win the Class Three 200m in 24.37 seconds. Her teammate Kasheika Cameron (24.61) took second.

The Class Two event was won by Hydel’s Taqece Duggan (24.71), while Monique Spencer (23.93) of Edwin Allen dominated the Class One race.

St Jago dominated the boys’ 200m, with Shamar Barnes (22.46) and Gary Gordon (23.56) winning the Class Two and Class Three sprints, respectively. Tacius Golding’s Shamar Brown (22.06) took gold in Class One.

Meanwhile, on opening day, Edwin Allen’s Christania Williams destroyed the field to win the girls’ Class One 100m in 11.62 seconds, well clear of Rene Medley (12.15) of Vere and Manchester’s Anna-Kay West (12.37).

The Class Two and Three equivalents also went to Edwin Allen, courtesy of Tasheca Stanley and Shellece Clark. St Jago’s Kayla Bonnick led home the Class Four field in 12.54 seconds.

The boys’ Class One 100m sprint went to Devin Dixon of Spalding High (10.72), while Holmwood’s Keyno Henry (11.02) won in Class Two. St Jago finished one-two in Class Three through Taiwane Garriques (11.52) and John Vernon (11.80).

Also on Thursday, Camira Haughton of Edwin Allen won the Class One 400m in a time of 56.94, while Hydel’s Taqece Duggan won the Class Two event in 57.54. Sanique Walker (58.82) of Vere Technical was the Class Three champion.

St Jago won two of the three 400m races in the boys’ category, with Nathon Allen (49.86) taking Class One, and Javad Black winning Class Three. Ryan Butler (51.17) of Holmwood won Class Two equivalent.

In the 1,500m, Vere Technical provided two of the three female winners, with Sasha-Gaye Whyte (4.55.68) and Britnie Dixon (5.04.65) copping the Class Two and Three titles, respectively. Edwin Allen’s Marleena Eubanks won the Class One event in 5.03.89 minutes.
