Expectations exceeded at SportsFeva 2014 finale
THERE was a lot of competitiveness expected for the final weekend of the 2014 Lasco Food Drink SportsFeva presented by Gatorade, but nothing could have prepared patrons for the events that unfolded last weekend.
Across all three tournaments contested — TumbleFeva, TennisFeva and SoccerFeva — the level of competition was unlike any of the previous years, and the organisers, the American International School of Kingston (AISK) were pleased to see that their commitment to hosting such a tournament continues to pay dividends.
For TumbleFeva — the gymnastics tournament — it was Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory, who came out on top in the school competition. They amassed 82.7 points to edge Ninja Kid Gymnastics, who tallied 82.2. Stella Maris were third with 81.7 points. On the day, it was Mikayla Brown (Ninja Kids) who was adjudged to be the top gymnast after totalling 28.5 of a possible 29.7 points through the day.
TennisFeva brought out the best of the youngsters on the court as they competed in two categories — 10 and under, and 12-14. In the former it was the home team AISK who captured the title ahead of Hopefield. They were close to completing a “tennis clean sweep” but were stopped in their exploits by Hillel Academy, who won in the 12-14 competition, with AISK finishing second.
SportsFeva 2014 came to a close with SoccerFeva and the competitiveness on both the boys’ and girls’ sections was high. For the boys, defending champions Hillel Academy and new entrants Jamaica College stamped their class on the field en route to the final.
Hillel had got past JC in the preliminary rounds, but the ‘Dark Blues’ got sweet revenge in the title decider — edging the encounter 2-1 in the closing minutes of the match. Despite being on the losing team, Sage Marley-Spence of Hillel Academy was crowned tournament MVP.
In the girls’ section, Lyford Cay International School (from the Bahamas) overcame a spirited AISK Yellow team 1-0 to capture their fourth hold on the title in as many years. Rosemarie Butler of Lyford Cay walked away with tournament MVP honours. Both teams made it to the final via penalty shoot-outs, with Gabrielle Belnavis (goalkeeper of AISK Yellow) being particularly impressive as she made two crucial saves to put her team through.
At the end of SportsFeva 2014, the stakeholders were pleased with the participation of all the schools, as all five competitions saw improvements, not only in numbers, but in their overall display as well.
The organisers AISK expressed gratitude to Digicel, Rainforest Seafoods, Guardian General Insurance Jamaica Limited, National Outdoor Advertising (NOA), who got on board for this year’s staging of their ‘Mini Olympics’ as associate sponsors. Manpower & Maintenance Limited and Cannonball Café were also appreciated for being patron sponsors.
