THE Law Enforcement Torch Run 5K Walk/Run seeks to raise $4 million to offset expenses for the Special Olympians to attend the World Summer Games in Los Angeles, California, USA.
The April 26 event, which has received a boost of $500,000 from its main sponsor Digicel, was launched at the Police Officers Club in Kingston, yesterday.
Speaking at the launch, Digicel’s sponsorship executive Sandra Ledgister said that she was pleased to announce her company’s commitment to the event.
“It is a really awesome feeling to be a part of this event, and I am happy to give our substantial support to help these Olympians. This event is for a worthy cause and so I am pleased to announce the commitment made by Digicel to be onboard for this wonderful event,” she said.
Glenmore Hinds, deputy Commissioner of police representing commissioner Owen Ellington, said that he was pleased to announce the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) participation in the event, plus a pledge of $1.2 million.
“It is my pleasure to announce that the JCF, through its branches and every division, is pledging $1.2 million to the event. In addition to that, every division will be required to send a total of 20 participants to take part in the 5K Run and we are pleased to be associated with this event,” the deputy commissioner said.
Meanwhile Lorna Bell, executive director for Special Olympics Jamaica, thanked all the sponsors for coming onboard to support this event.
“Today I stand with confidence and say to you all that your dollar is an investment in people and our country, Jamaica. It is an investment that will bring you great reward, this movement called Special Olympics is committed and dedicated in changing lives and I cannot thank you all enough. You have committed and dedicated your support to our athletes.
She added: “We are proud to say that we have the best law enforcement team in the Caribbean and I thank all the sponsors and I look forward to partnering with you all, because of your commitment and support the Olympians can now show off their talent to the world.”
