Tessanne performs CDN$40,000 a capella ‘gig’
NBC’s The Voice season 5 winner Tessanne Chin spurred a bidding war between Jamaican-born billionaire Michael Lee-Chin and Raymond Chang at a fund-raising banquet at the Ritz Carlton in Toronto Sunday night.
According to the Toronto Star, the bid opened at CDN$1,000 and closed at a whopping CDN$40,000. Lee-Chin, who cited the figure as being “too low”, stunned the gathering when he upped the bid to CDN$10,000 from CDN$4,000 — where it lingered briefly. Chang matched the bid on condition that Chin sang a second song. But Lee-Chin then upped the ante and offered another CDN$20,000 for a third song — CDN$13,333 per song.
A gracious Chin took to the stage, sans a band, and performed a capella versions of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Redemption Song as well as her rock-reggae hit Hideaway. The CDN$2,000-per-ticket event was hosted by the University of the West Indies alum to honour Chin.
The proceeds from the event will go toward Caribbean-based university system scholarships. Chin is scheduled to be back in Toronto on May 17 for a concert at the Sony Centre.
