Exotic South American Fruits
There is more to healthy than our typical apples and oranges. All over the world there are many exotic fruits that not only keep our taste buds on the edge of their seats, but help keep our bodies fit and healthy. Here is a look at a few:
Pitaya aka Dragon fruit
This south American exotic super fruit comes in two varieties: magenta and golden yellow. These fruits, though the outside may seem like it is the perfect missile, when cut, its interior reveals a white to light red inside with black seeds whose texture is sometimes likened to a kiwi. The taste, in contrast to its vibrant appearance is more refreshing. Some compare it to a watermelon.
Physalis
This fruit has an exterior that may look like a starfruit, but, if examined, one notices that this is just the outer-shell. Many compare its shape to that of a Chinese lamp. However, when this is removed, the fruit looks and tastes similar to a tomato just a bit sweeter, and contains twice the Vitamin C that is in lemons. The Physalis is native to South America.
Jaboticaba
This fruit could simply be described as a giant grape. However, its dark purple exterior is thicker and tougher than grapes. The fruit is on average between æ and 1 1/2 inches in diameter, and is grown directly from the tree trunks. Its white, gelatinous flesh has taste similar to grape. The fruit is used in South America, which is its native land similar to how grapes are used elsewhere, to make wines, jams and jellies.
CupuaÁu
This, the Brazilian national fruit is heralded by some as the next super fruit . This is due to its buttery texture, and its myriad of health benefits and plethora of nutrients. This sweet treat is a member of the cocoa family and has a chocolatey-pineapple flavour, which resides in its creamy, buttery tan pulp. This super fruit is also used in hydrating lotions and skin creams.
Bacuri
This Brazilian fruit, while not exactly the best looking, makes up for this in its taste. The thick yellow-brown skin makes way for a refreshing tasty white sweet and tangy interior. This fruit, although little known, is used to make delicious ice cream, jams and jellies.
