Bar Association condemns threats to DPP, prosecutors after Kartel trial
THE Jamaican Bar Association (JBA) has condemned threats made to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn and her team of prosecutors in the aftermath of the Vybz Kartel murder trial, which saw the entertainer convicted to life in prison.
President of the association, Donovan Walker, in expressing concerns about the threats, called on the police to thoroughly investigate the matter, following media reports that a number of lawyers were in fear for their safety.
“The Jamaican Bar Association categorically denounces and condemns any threats of violence in any form against the DPP and views same as an attack on our justice system and the rule of law,” the JBA president said in a press release.
“The DPP and the prosecutors in that office have a constitutional duty to undertake criminal prosecutions in Jamaica and those of us involved in the Jamaican justice system should never yield to criminal assaults as evinced by these evil and disturbing acts,” said Walker.
He called on the police to fully investigate all threats and bring all perpetrators to justice, while offering the full and continued protection to the DPP, her prosecutors and their families.
At the same time, Walker called for counselling and support to be given to any prosecutor traumatized or in apprehension or fear in light of the threats.
“We encourage the DPP and her team not to be detracted or discouraged by these vulgar assaults on the discharge of their constitutional office and we offer them our fullest support,” he said.
