Mico Research Day today
THE Mico University College stages its 11th annual Research Day today under the theme ‘The New Teacher: Identity and Responsibility’.
According to a news release from the more than 170-year-old educational institution, a number of evidence-based paper presentations will be made across the campus on Marescaux Road in Kingston between 9:00 am and 7:30 pm.
“The presenters will comprise faculty members and students of Mico, as well as the wider academic community, both locally and internationally,” the university said.
The presentations will be titled: ‘From Apples to Apps: The New Tablets to Treat the Jamaican Educational System’; ‘The Wired Teacher’; ‘Water Harvesting for Sustainable Agriculture in a Teacher Education Community’; as well as ‘Who’s Teaching? Who’s Learning? Exploring the Praxis of Teacher Learner Collaborations.’
“A cadre of outstanding speakers from private and public sector, civil society, and academia have also been selected to participate in panel discussions and to bring to the fore their wealth of knowledge in teacher education and pedagogical skills necessary to educate children in this complex and digital age,” the Mico news release said.
Among the panellists who will discuss the topic ‘The New Teacher: What’s New?’ are Dr Winsome Gordon, CEO, Jamaica Teaching Council; Prof Carolyn Cooper, Faculty of Humanities and Education, University of the West Indies (UWI); and Dr Mark Nicely, president, Jamaica Teachers’ Association.
They will be joined by Senator Ruel Reid, principal, Jamaica College; Dr Michael Bucknor, head of department, Literature in English, UWI; and Dr Fritz Pinnock, executive director, Maritime Institute of Jamaica.
Aubyn Hill, chief executive officer, Corporate Strategies Limited, and chairman of NationGrowth MicroFinance Limited, will give the main address at the closing ceremony this evening.
“Mico intends to remain one of the leaders in teacher education in the Caribbean through intensive and investigative research, to identify innovative methods of teaching within and across disciplines and to highlight creativity and problem solving to embrace national development,” said Mico President Professor
