JOSEPH Black of Campion College established two records to highlight the morning session of the Mayberry Swimming Championships at the National Aquatics Centre yesterday.

Black led the way as members of Jamaica’s team for the upcoming Carifta Swimming Championships seek to keep good form.

He first stopped the clock at 25.93 seconds in the boys’ 13-14 50-metre freestyle to beat the nine-year-old record of 26.24 seconds set by Brad Hamilton of Kingston College in 2005. His teammates Keith-Jordan Wilkinson (27.42s) and Russell Hinds (27.95s) were second and third, respectively.

The trio, all 14 years old, then combined with 13-year-old Jesse Marsh to form the Campion College A team which broke the record in the High Schools 200-metre freestyle relays with a time of 1:47.75 minutes, lowering the old mark of 1:49.03 set last year by former students of Campion College. Campion College B team (1:58.06) finished second and Wolmer’s Boys (2:00.04) third.

Black had earlier won the age group 200-metre freestyle in a time of 2:09.30 minutes, just outside the record time of 2:08.93. Kymon Naar (2:14.81) of Jamaica College was second, and Clay Stewart (2:14.83) of Wolmer’s Boys third.

Angara Sinclair of Immaculate Conception High won the girls’ equivalent in a time of 2:34.01 minutes, ahead of her teammates Justine Lopez (2:37.47) and Katherine Brown (2:41.97).

Sinclair then returned to win the girls’ 13-14 50-metre backstroke in a time of 34.81 seconds ahead of D’Agaene Clarke (37.56s) of Campion College, and Keidi Campbell (37.85s) of St Andrew High.

Leanne McMaster of Campion College easily won the girls’ 15-16 200-metre freestyle in a time of 2:26.54 minutes ahead of Immaculate’s Gabrielle Hopkins (2:42.62) and Cheser Adams (2:52.38) also of Campion College.

McMaster and Adams then joined forces with Nadani Dixon and Asleigh Brown to form the Campion College A team that won the 15-16 200-metre freestyle relay in a time of 2:08.54 minutes. Immaculate A and B teams were second and third, respectively.

Xavier Phillips (2:14.03) representing Wolmer’s, won the boys’ 15-16 200-metre freestyle just ahead of Nicholas Haughton (2:14.06) of Campion College, and Orane Garrick (2:20.19) also of Wolmer’s.

Phillips and his teammates then won the relay in a time of 1:47.80, with Wolmer’s B (1:55.96) finishing second and Campion College (1:59.17) third.

Anjuii Barrett (29.08s) of Campion College just failed to catch Annastazia Chin of Immaculate, who won the girls’ 13-14 50-metre freestyle in a time of 29.03 seconds. D’Agaene Clarke (29.84s) was third.

Barrett later recovered from that defeat to assist in carrying the Campion College A team to victory in the relay in a time of 2:06.44 minutes. St Andrew High (2:09.10) was second with Immaculate (2:10.57) further back in third.

Jesse Marsh also won the 13-14 50-metre backstroke in a time of 31.83 seconds to get the better of Jamaica College’s Kymon Naar (33.36s) and Alex Mignott (35.99s) of St George’s College.

Stefani Webley of Immaculate won the girls’ 17 and over equivalent in a time of 34.92 seconds ahead of Shade Thaxter (35.80s) of Campion College, and Kathleen Pellington (37.29s) of Ascot High.

The championships continues today with the primary and preparatory action.
