Santos, Brown’s Town, Mountain View, UWI hunt top qualifying spots
SANTOS, Brown’s Town, UWI and Mountain View will all enter today’s final round of games in the preliminary group stage of the KSAFA Super League intent on securing crucial top places ahead of the quarter-final stage scheduled for two
weeks’ time.
Santos and Brown’s Town will both be hunting three points to top Zone A. Santos hold a slender advantage over Brown’s Town heading into their final game, leading by a mere goal, as both teams are locked on 17 points.
Brown’s Town could have been the outright leaders but could only manage a 0-0 draw against Barbican (15), while Santos prevailed 2-1 over the relegated Police National (two). In the other game of the zone, Rae Town, in a must win game, played to an exciting 3-3 draw with Maxfield. The result means that Maxfield now occupy the final quarter-final place with 12 points, while Rae Town, nine points, will miss the knockout stages unless they grab all three points and Maxfield are beaten by five clear goals by
Brown’s Town.
The full fixtures for the zone will see Rae Town hosting Santos at Breezy Castle, Brown’s Town will play Maxfield at Vauxhall, while Barbican make the short trip to Shortwood to face Police National. All games begin at 3:30 pm.
In Zone B, Mountain View, 19 points, will look to hold off UWI Pelicans, 18 points, for the top spot. Mountain View will have the easier task, as they will face the already relegated Greenwich, four points, at Excelsior, while UWI will host Shortwood, who sit in third on 15 points at the Mona Bowl.
UWI maintained hope of securing the top place in Zone B thanks to last minute heroics from Akeem Thenstead, who gifted them a 2-1 win over Greenwich in their last encounter. Greenwich took an early lead and the UWI team had to fight their way back from the deficit.
Jeffrey Brown converted a penalty shortly before the break after Abayomi D’Aguilar was taken down in the box. Thenstead then completed the comeback on 93 minutes with a beautifully struck free kick.
The tie of the round will certainly be the clash between Allman Woodford and Real Mona at the Bell Chung Oval. Allman Woodford sit on 11 points and only need to avoid defeat to book a quarter-final place.
Real Mona sit just outside the qualifying spots on eight points, and will only be looking for three points to elevate themselves above Allman Woodford into the final qualifying spot.
The quarter-final round will begin on Saturday April 26 and will see the winner of Zone A playing the fourth place team of Zone B, while the Zone B winner will face-off with the fourth place team from Zone A. The second-placed teams will face the third-placed teams from
each zone.
