Steven Marston’s business sense
STEVEN Marston says being a businessman for the last 21 years has brought him happiness, success, satisfaction, purpose, and most of all, independence.
Marston, who heads CAC 2000 Limited, first entered the world of business ownership in 1993 when he saw promise in the business of air conditioning and bought 49 per cent of the company’s shares when it was being sold.
“The company originally started in 1929… then [eventually] merged into Homelectrix in the early 1980s and re-formed when Homelectrix was sold in 1993. That is when I took over and bought 49 per cent,” the proud businessman told Career & Education.
“Two members of the management team initiated a buyout of the remaining 51 per cent in 2000 and CAC 2000 was formed. The business was registered August 18, 2000,” he said.
Since buying the business, Marston and his shareholders have revolutionised it. They not only focus on the company’s tradition of servicing and installing air conditioners, they now do auditing, designing, installing and servicing of energy solutions products, which save organisations money on water, chemicals, energy and maintenance, with a primary focus on air conditioning.
“We have managed to provide value solutions for our customers while building a solid company that is a fun but demanding place to work,” he said.
And with his business performing well, with a staff of 40 and 60 contracted technicians, he said he is satisfied and is looking forward to greater things.
What’s his daily motivation?
“My family, my wife and five children, my job, living life and making a difference,” he said.
Marston’s 10 benefits of being an entrepreneur:
1. I’ve built a legacy business that provides meaningful employment.
2. I’ve experienced continuous business growth for suppliers and shareholders.
3. I’ve had fewer meetings, unless I call them.
4. I have financial independence, but it comes with more stress.
5. I get to be innovative, think of new things, and if they do not work, revert to what I was doing before.
6. I am never bored as there is always something that needs to be done.
7. I get to make a difference with those around me.
8. I became a leader rather than a manager.
9. I’ve recognised that a good team will always outperform any individual.
10. Every day is a new adventure in learning, creativity and achievement.
