THE St Mary Parish Council is hoping to see significant savings from its decision to go paperless as it equip its members with tablet computers.

The Council has embarked on an initiative which will see its councillors and other administrative staff being assigned tablet computers for monthly meetings as the local governing body seeks to cut back on the volume of paper it uses in carrying out its functions.

According to mayor of Port Maria and chairman of the Council Levan Freeman checks were made and it was realised that using the tablet computers would cost the council less.

“We found that it would be far more cost effective,” he told the Jamaica Observer, following last Thursday’s monthly meeting where the tablets were used for the

first time.

Freeman said there were certain guidelines which had to be followed in the purchasing of the devices, however he did not disclose any further details about the procurement of the 20 or so tablets.

He, however, pointed out that the tablets are the property of the Council and each member will be required to return the one they have been assigned when they are no longer a part of the body.
