Carrie Russell lights up UTech Classic on record-breaking night

CARRIE Russell of MVP sped to an impressive 11.19 seconds to win the Women’s 100m Invitational event at the UTech Classic and equalled Schillonie Calvert’s 2009 record on a night when nine records were broken at the National Stadium last Saturday.

The powerfully built Russell had none other than Calvert of Racers well behind in second spot with 11.36 with Annesha McLaughin third in 11.40 seconds.

This is expected to be break out year for the promising Russell, whose time is joint third fastest over the distance behind American Joana Atkins with 11.09 and Melissa Breen of Australia with 11.11. Jamaican schoolgirl Christania Williams of Edwin Allen also share a time of 11.19 done at the ISSA Athletics Championship last month.

Russell was also part of the MVP 4x100m relay team without Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce that established a world-leading time of 43.31 seconds. American Pure Athletics Club did 43.32 in April at the Florida Relays. Edwin Allen High’s world high school record of 43.95 seconds, ranked them 14th overall.

On the men’s side, the Yohan Blake-led Racers without the great Usain Bolt, raced to a record 38.41 seconds for the 4x100m, which is the third world-leading time behind the University of Florida’s 38.29 and Texas A&M’s 38.30 seconds.

In the absence of Javon Francis, Calabar High broke both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays in 40.06 seconds and 3:10.61 minutes as they impressively warmed up for the Penn Relays to be held in two weeks’ time.

Racers’ Ristananna Tracey lowered the women’s 400m hurdles record, and in the process, established a world-leading 55.64 seconds. Jamaica now has the three fastest time this year with Clayton Rushell clocking 56.41 last week and Janieve Russell stopping the clock at 56.50 seconds.

Deborah Rodriquez of Uruguay and American Kendra Harrison are next with 56.60 seconds.

Duece Carter of UWI ran 13.81 seconds to win the 110 hurdles and erased the 2009 Jean Juste of Albany University’s record of 14.14 seconds from the books. However, Carter’s time has him at number 20 on the world-leading best headed by American Donald Oliver with 13.38 seconds done in March.

Odayne Richards of MVP broke the men’s shot put with a throw of 19.15m, erasing the old mark of 18.08m set in 2011 by Raymond Brown. Richards’ season-best of 20.38m has him ninth in the world-leading best behind American Ryan Crouser with 21.27m.

MVP’s Christine Day captured the Women’s 400m in 51.43 seconds ahead of Annastacia LeRoy of Sprintec, who did 51.51 seconds giving Jamaica the four fastest times in the world this year.

Stephanie McPherson lead with 51.23 ahead of Kaliese Spencer with 51.39. Robin Reynolds of the USA is fifth fastest with 51.57 seconds.

Meanwhile, Olympic 200m bronze medallist Warren Weir was disqualified after false-starting in the 100m and the race was won by Akan’s Jason Livermore in 10.25 seconds. But Livermore’s time has him way down in 27th position just ahead of St Jago’s 16-year-old Raheem Chambers with 10.28 seconds.

Jamaica’s quickest time this year is 10.11 seconds done by Andrew Fisher of UTech at the Intercol Championship on April 4. The world-leading time is held by Simon Magakwe of South Africa who did 9.98 seconds on April 12.

MVP’s Stephanie McPherson, who has the leading time in the 400m, turned in an impressive 22.96 seconds to win the 200m ahead of Natasha Morrison of UTech with 23.31. Olympic 100 silver medallist Kerron Stewart of Racers was relegated to third in 23.64 seconds.

McPherson’s time placed her eighth behind American Joana Atkins with 22.27 and Antonique Strachan of Bahamas with 22.59 seconds. Jamaica’s Simone Facey with 22.97 seconds is ninth overall.

Moscow World Championship 100m bronze medallist and multiple 4×100 relay gold winner, Nesta Carter, won the Men’s 200m in 20.54, which placed him 19th overall. The world leaders are Dedric Dukes of America with 19.97 and Carvin Nkanata of Kenya with 20.17 seconds.
