Heaven bats for innovative 10/10 cricket concept
PRESIDENT for the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven says the new 10/10 Power Play Cricket competition is a good way going forward in building cricket in Jamaica.
Heaven said that 10/10 cricket is a good way of introducing a new and fun way of cricket in communities is another step in the development of the game in Jamaica.
“Overall, the success that we have reached so far really justifies this format of the game, as we know it is new and we are happy that Supligen came on board with us. Powerplay T10 cricket is not played anywhere else in the world right now; it is an innovation of the JCA for 2014. We hope that it will grow from strength to strength (and so far) the turn out, participation and the spirit have been good,” he said
Heaven also outlined that the short version of the game has more value than the longer version.
“When T20 cricket came around I guess it had its concerns about development aspects and it has proven to be of value to cricket in general. What we can safely say about the shorter version of cricket is that it enhances the run rate at a higher level.
“If you look at Test cricket, scoring at 4.7 runs per over, it is not because we have more aggressive batsmen, but because they have learned from the shorter version of the game, how to score fast. So it has encouraged fielding, running between the wickets,” he told the Jamaica Observer at a presentation ceremony for the Portmore phase of the Supligen/JCA Power Play Cricket competition.
In that final, GC Foster defeated Waterford by seven wickets to lift the Portmore title.
