Raeven Renae upsets rivals to land Jamaica Oaks
AFTER finishing 11 lengths in fifth place in the 1,000 Guineas, Raeven Renae turned up on this occasion a completely different animal and romped the 75th running of the Bigga Jamaica Oaks (for the Hilma Veira Trophy) at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The three-year-old bay filly by Seeking The Glory-Raging Fury by Al’s River Cat was sent off at odds of 8-1 in a good field of 13 talented horses over the 2,000-metre trip.
Ridden by Shane Ellis and trained by Fitzory Glispie, Raeven Renae broke well and was taken into last place by Ellis behind the leaders Bubbling Angeline (Winston Griffiths up), Sparkling Michaela (Percival Williams) and Queen Paula (Andre Martin) passing the winning post for the first time.
As the 13 runners sorted themselves out, Sparkling Michaela then picked up the lead at the six-furlong pole with Raeven Renae still in last place.
Heading towards the 400-metre pole when Griffiths asked the Phillip Feanny-trained Bubbling Angeline to go, Ellis then sent Raeven Renae in chase as he began to round horses approaching the home bend.
Turning for home some six lengths in third, Ellis then produced his mount on the outside and the Fitzroy Glispie and Hayden Thomas-owned Raeven Renae then responded well and drew away for a comfortable four-length victory over Bubbling Angeline. Also Correct (Dick Cardenas) came on for third with Sparkling Michaela completing the frame.
Raeven Renae covered the distance in 2:11:2 minutes.
“Richard Mairs was supposed to ride this horse, but Ellis called me and told me that he wanted to ride a couple of horses for me. He sat down and discussed the race and he (Ellis) said he was going to win and that is what he did,” trainer Glispie said.
Raeven Renae completed a double for Ellis; his other winner was Jarreau.
Racing continues on Wednesday with the annual renewal of the Joshua Morrison Memorial Cup.
