The Bigga Jamaica Oaks — the analysis
HISTORY will record that the best stayer among the three-year-old fillies of 2014 duly obliged in the 10-furlong run for the Oaks. Raeven Renae under the astute guidance of Shane Ellis did her running in the last three furlongs of this fillies only Classic to beat her 12 rivals convincingly and with dispatch.
The victory by Raeven Renae was a credit to the conditioning skills of trainer Fitzroy Glispie who continues to grow and develop in his profession.
RAEVEN RENAE – winner – Showed vast improvement and obvious staying power to win the Oaks. Well prepared and well ridden. Played the waiting game at the back of the field before making her winning move. Provided Orange Valley stallion, Seeking The Glory with his first taste of Classic success. This is the second Classic winner for Fitzroy Glispie as a trainer, and both have come from fillies. Continue to follow the progress of this filly as the colts and geldings have no established stayer, thus giving a live shot to Raeven Renae in the 12-furlong Jamaica Derby.
BUBBLING ANGELINE – second – A much better run in the Oaks, especially when compared with the 1,000 Guineas. Went to the front and was rated well by her jockey Winston Griffiths who used his wise head to back her off the pace when the fleet-footed Sparkling Mickaela came to challenge. Held her gallop well but had little left in the tank when the winner made her run. Much improved, but just lacking in staying power.
ALL CORRECT – third – Finished one better in the Oaks. Ran as expected for a share.
SPARKLING MICHAELA – fourth – Ran her heart out and was a factor in the mid-section of the race. Did well.
MISS JUANITA – fifth – Was never a winning factor but earned a share of the purse.
QUEEN PAULA – sixth – A very disappointing performance by the Guineas winner. Was completely out of sorts on the day. Do not discard as it may have been a one-off bad day.
PROPHETESS – seventh – Made up numbers.
PRIME DIRECTIVE – eighth – Hopefully will now set target on breaking maiden tag.
SOUND OF MIRACLE – ninth – There was no divine intervention.
GEISHA’S GLORY – tenth – Out of her depth.
BLACK THORN – eleventh – Most disappointing, most anti-climactic. Simply did not attend the races on Oaks day despite her rather good second in the Guineas. Always at the back of the field and ended there. Much more was expected.
EXCEL – twelfth – The time to excel will come at the non-winners of two level.
KABRINA – thirteenth – Needs time to rest now.
