Diamond League commentator Storey for Jamaica Invitational
WORLD renowned British IAAF Diamond League commentator Stuart Storey will grace the Jamaica International Invitational Meet (JIIM) at the National Stadium on Saturday.
Storey, whose voice is synonymous with track and field worldwide, actually ran the 110 yards hurdles at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, and first started commentating in 1973. He covered his first of nine Olympics in 1976 for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
Ironically, it was that 1976 Montreal Olympics that Jamaica’s Don Quarrie won gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m.
“We have made a few changes this year and we are having the announcer who announces at the Diamond League meets… he is coming to announce at our meet, revealed meet director Quarrie.
Meanwhile, Beijing Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain and Jamaica’s Nickel Ashmeade have withdrawn from the meet with injuries.
Ohuruogu, 29, who also won the 2007 and 2013 World Championship 400m, was scheduled to be a part of a stellar field comprising American 2012 Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross, the World Indoor champion Francene McCorory, and Jamaica’s Stephanie McPherson, Novlene Williams-Mills, Rosemarie Whyte and Kaliese Spencer.
This was the event Quarrie said was the best in terms of quality and with Ohuruogu’s absence, it will take a little away from the event.
Jamaica’s Ashmeade, who was supposed to line up in the 100m against Americans Justin Gatlin and Walter Dix, along with fellow Jamaicans Nesta Carter, Kemar Bailey-Cole and Warren Weir, also withdrew through injury.
Jamaica’s 110 hurdles 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Hansle Parchment warmed up for the meet with a World-leading run of 13.14 seconds at the Drakes relay on Saturday.
Parchment got the better of 2013 Moscow World Championship gold medallist David Oliver, who did 13.23 seconds. Ryan Wilson, the reigning USA outdoor champion, finished third with a time of 13.30 and will do battle with Parchment again on Saturday along with Andrew Riley.
There will also be some intriguing battles in the filed with the men’s shot put featuring America’s top throwers in Reese Hoffa, the 2007 World champion; Christian Cantwell, the 2009 Berlin champion; and Ryan Whiting, the 2013 World Championship silver medallist. They will
compete against Odayne Richards, who will lead Jamaica’s charges.
“Usually they don’t want to compete against each other, but they are aware that in Jamaica they throw well and I think one of the reasons is that the crowd in that area gives them that motivation,” said Quarrie.
Americans Gia Lewis Smallwood and Whitney Ashley are set to battle locals in the women’s discus, while William Clay and Michael Hartfield of the US will battle Jamaica’s Nicholas Gordon in the long jump.
