Lady Danza for Starters Trophy
OFFICIAL preparation for the coming three-year-old Classic season of thoroughbred in Jamaica takes centre stage at Caymanas Park today.
A field of six seemingly well prepared native-bred two-year-old colt and five fillies will go postward in the Starters Trophy for a purse of $715,000 going 400 metres straight. Owner/breeder/trainer Lorenzo Robinson, who recently won the 1,000 Guineas with his Queen Paula has the strongest hand in today’s launch with three of the top runners hailing from his barn.
Fielding the only colt and two fillies in the line-up, chief among his entrants seems to be the quick-off-the-feet Lady Danza, and based on how well she has carried herself in her exercise gallops it will take a formidable performance from one of her fellow beginners to baulk her progress from raking in the spoils.
A bay filly by a noted sprinter Film Director out the Track Baron mare Bar Danza with decent bottom line pedigree, the medium built Lady Danza to be ridden by Ray Stewart, could use her early speed to good effect, although stable mate Gold Screw with Andre Martin astride could come powering late in the event to share the spoils.
However, this one is bred for longer distances and could end up a trifle short of the mark with Queen Cole his other filly stable mate not far away, with Percy Williams having the leg up.
An interesting entry is the Gemini-owned and well-bred bay filly Raj Kumari by Liquidity out of Black Thatch (The Medic) bred by YS (1955) Ltd and prepared for racing by Morris Powell.
Judging from her exercise report Raj Kumari could not be considered as a frequent visitor at exercise, but whenever she does it shows that she has ability but is one who may not like rigorous training and is here for the schooling.
