Pelicans, Mico ‘A’ hunt berths to SVL Major League final

UWI Pelicans and Mico ‘A’ go in search of a place in the final when they engage Waulgrovians ‘A’ and Jamalco as the 2014 Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL)/Netball Jamaica Major League netball semi-finals take place today at the Leila Robinson Courts, starting at 7:00 pm.

Both Pelicans and Mico ‘A’ are the only unbeaten teams in the Major League competition and there is a possibility that they could face each other in the final, providing they come out victorious.

Pelicans will face Waulgrovians ‘A’, while Mico ‘A’ meet Jamalco. Earlier, both Pelicans and Mico ‘A’ scored wins over Waulgrovians ‘A’ and Jamalco in the preliminary rounds. It could, however, be different today, as both Waulgrovians ‘A’ and Jamalco will be on the hunt to avenge those defeats, and in the process end the winning streak of the two.

Despite the semi-pro draft depleting Jamalco of 12 players, they have been able to put together a formidable team that will now challenge the unbeaten Mico ‘A’ for a spot in the final.

Coach Winson Nevers will be looking to turn the table against the Annette Daleycoached Mico ‘A’. Waulgrovians ‘A’, on the other hand, who have also lost a few players due to the semi-professional league, welcome the services of former national captain Simone Forbes, who is expected to put more rhythm in their attacks, as well as play a leading role in setting the pace for her team.

Coach Marvette Anderson will be looking for a revenge win over the Pelicans, coached by Oberon Pitterson-Nattie this time around. Pelicans advanced to the semi-finals with a runaway 66-33 win over Alpha ‘A’ in their quarter-final encounter played last Saturday.

LaDonna Lamonth scored 39 goals from 47 attempts and Shaquina Francis hit 22 from 29 attempts for the Pelicans, while Nathalie Grant got 25 goals from 28 efforts for Alpha ‘A’. Mico ‘A’ defeated Mico ‘B’ 41-34.

Taniel Roberts scored 32 goals from 41 attempts for Mico ‘A’, while Chiquana Reid got 29 goals from 37 efforts for Mico ‘B’. Waulgrovians ‘A’ cruised past a spirited Police ‘A’ 66-38 with quarterly scores of 18-11, 34-19, 48-31.

Shanice Carridice scored 38 goals from 47 attempts and Simone Forbes hit 20 goals from 28 efforts, while for Police ‘A’ Marcella Thompson scored 25 goals from 29 attempts, and Neisha Howard sank 13 from 19 efforts. Jamalco defeated Knights 49-31 through quarterly scores of 14-8, 29- 15, and 39-24.

For Jamalco Sasha Mitchell scored 32 goals from 38 attempts and Marsha Murphy- Dawkins hit 10 from 12 efforts, while Amira Haase got 18 goals from 32 attempts for the Knights.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Ventures Limited Minor League semi-finals will also be played today, beginning at 6:00 pm with Titchfield up against Molynes United ‘C’, and Liguanea United ‘B’ taking on Pembroke Hall.

In the Minor League quarter-finals played last Saturday at the Leila Robinson Courts, the Sylvester Campbell-coached Liguanea United ‘B’ maintained their unbeaten run with a crushing 33-7 win over Maxfield Park ‘B’.

Titchfield, coached by Winston Wilson, held off a stiff challenge from Skibo ‘B’ to win narrowly 26-25, Pembroke Hall got the better of Global United ‘B’ 24-16, while the Roy Prycecoached Molynes United ‘C’ defeated Department of Correctional Services 33-19.
