Two Jamaican umpires for AFNA tourney
JAMAICA’S Dave Brown and Terrence Peart are among seven Caribbean umpires who have been selected for the upcoming American Federation of Netball Associations (AFNA) Championship, scheduled for August 18-26 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
A third Jamaican, Sylvester ‘Chris’ Campbell, was selected but did not accept the invitation. He said he is unavailable to attend.
Brown and Peart are international umpire awardees of the International Netball Federation (INF), which is the highest level of umpiring in the world.
Brown said he is looking forward to the challenge as he wants to do his best for his country.
“It is a pleasure for me as a Jamaican to have been selected to officiate at one [of] these tournaments. I have been working hard at these games and when opportunities like these come by, you just have to take themand do your best; I am looking forward to representing my country well because only your best is good enough,” Brown told the Jamaica Observer.
Meanwhile, Peart said that he was honoured to be selected for the AFNA.
“It is good, it is a good feeling. It has been a while since I have attended games like these and so I am honoured to be appointed as an umpire to officiate at the games.
“It is a good competition and I will do my best and try to make sure everyone has a fair game,” Peart said.
Other umpires selected are Marion Johnson Hurley (Barbados), Wayne Erasmus Benti (St Lucia) and the Trinidad and Tobago trio — Joel Young Strong, Joel Brown and Lilia Mathurin Cameron.
The AFNA Tournament serves as the regional qualifying event for the INF World Cup, slated for 2015 in Sydney, Australia.
