THE second meet in the Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) season, Seaboard Marine Total Drift Invasion, will feature two days of racing: Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at the event’s press launch at the Sport Development Foundation office on Phoenix Avenue in St Andrew.

Fans will be able to watch qualifying runs and a limited race programme at Dover Raceway, St Ann, on Saturday afternoon at a reduced entry cost, with Sunday May 25 offering a full day’s racing at the regular prices.

“We will have motorbike, Improved Production races and two drift demonstrations on Saturday after 2:00 pm,” Monique Gibbs, JRDC communications director, told Auto.

As the Labour Day event is not part of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship this year, the JRDC has partnered with Nu-Gen Motorsports to retain its international flavour with five overseas drifters. There will be five 30-minute drift demonstrations using the entire race circuit.

According to Brian Ingleton of Nu-Gen, they have done testing with local drifters to see if Dover could safely accommodate high-speed drifting.

“These cars have up to 650 horsepower, and given the unique nature of our track, we had to make sure they would be able to drift safely,” Ingleton explained.

Ingleton has not ruled out the possibility of tandem runs, where the cars drift side by side through the corners. He also promised an extra surprise on Sunday.

For the hardcore regulars, racing is expected to be fast and furious. David Summerbell Jr has thrown down the gauntlet to himself after resetting the lap record at the last meet.

“I’m focused on getting the car to run all six races because I’ve won seven races in one meet using different cars. Winning the six races in one car would be a new personal best for me,” said Summerbell Jr.

With six drivers all tied on points, there is no room for error as it could alter any championship hopes.
