Typewriter — looks good in Mark My Word Trophy
THE Mark My Word Trophy will highlight a two-trophy nine-race holiday, Labour Day card at Caymanas Park today. The Labour Day Trophy positioned among high claimers for a purse of $570,000 going 1200 metres is the secondary feature.
Slotted in as the third race on the card and set among Open Allowance three-year-olds and upward going 1820 metres for a purse of $786,500, the Mark My Word has attracted a lively field of seven headlined by last year’s Superstakes winner Typewriter.
To be run in honour of one of the finest locally-bred racers, Mark My Word has been not only a Triple Crown winner and Horse Of The Year but as a Graded Stakes performer was unbeatable from any distance above 1400 metres. Post time for the call is set at approximately 2:15 pm with first post at 1:10 pm.
The late bloomer, Typewriter is in some way like Mark My Word and although giving weight all round to some in form runners should not be easily beaten over this extended sprint event. Typewriter, who will be ridden by his favourite jockey Shane Ellis, made an unsuccessful five-year-old debut on last while going down to old foe Commanding Chief by 3 1/2 lengths going 1400 metres.
The run would have certainly done him a world of good and now going over an extended trip should be seen to better advantage in the presence of recent winner Fantabulous carrying a mere 48.0kg with claiming apprentice Kuri Powell, All Correct with Dick Cardenas and Military Move with Paul Francis up. Of his rivals, these at a glance are expected to be his main dangers but something has to go really amiss to deny Typewriter his first victory as a five-year-old. Prepared for racing by Spencer Chung, Typewriter is a bay gelding progeny of Western Classic out of Doc’s Paladin.
While Typewriter is expected to take home the bacon in the feature, Shane Ellis also possesses a better than even chance of landing the secondary feature aboard Rock Union for trainer Anthony Nunes. A lightly raced but talented four-year-old dark bay gelded offspring of Seeking The Glory out of Lady Lydia (Private Interview), Rock Union returns to the track as a winner at four years old. This followed a no-show in last year’s Jamaica Derby following a stumble at the start but won with great ease on his return and looks even sharper at exercise and being very comfortable riding the bends should not surprise to chalk up his fourth career win with the same authority having scored with great comfort going 1,000 metres round and 1,300 metres not so long ago.
