Miracle Star hands Cardenas three-timer
Former champion jockey Dick Cardenas took the spotlight by riding a triple, with the highlight being on board Miracle Star in the feature Reynold ‘Ren’ Gonzalves Memorial Cup over 2,000 metres at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Miracle Star broke well and was sent to the lead by Cardenas passing the winning post for the first time in the two-turn event. Raging Prospect (Ruja Lahoe) settled in second with Jah Love (Paul Francis) occupying third position ahead of Timeforarms (Richards Mitchell) going into the club-house turn.
As the seven runners sort themselves out, Lahoe asked his mount to go, and in a flash, Raging Prospect picked up the lead passing the half-mile. The Patrick Chang-trained Miracle Star stayed close just a length down approaching the home bend.
Turning for home some two lengths behind Raging Prospect, who looked all over the winner at the furlong-pole, Cardenas then prodded the five-year-old on the inside and the chestnut mare by Miracle Man-Irish Star by Irish Quest got up in time to beat Raging Prospect by a half length.
Jah Love was 14 lengths adrift in third and Timeforarms completing the fame.
Owned by Joseph and Peter-John Rhoden, Miracle Star covered the distance in 2:09:1 minutes to register her first win in an Overnight Allownace company and for the season.
Cardenas’ other winners were Ibelieve N Miracle in the third race over 1,500 metres for trainer Patrick Lynch and the Wayne DaCosta-trained Insane Bolt over 1,100 metres in the sixth race.
Meanwhile, trainer Anthony Nunes saddled two winners to top the trainers on the nine-race card. His winners were El Regalo and Touch De Road.
Racing continues on Saturday with the running of the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame Stakes Trophy and the Leslie McRae Memorial Trophy.
