First Regional Cooperative Credit Union, which recently reopened its newly refurbished offices in Highgate, St Mary, is giving back to the community through donations to the hospital and two schools in the parish.

Port Maria Hospital was the recipient of a suction machine while Islington High School received a photocopier and Mount Maria High School got a cheque for $115,000 towards purchasing one.

The organisations were quite appreciative of the donation which amounted to almost $500,000.

Patrick Tyrell, vice principal of the Islington High School, said the donation of a photocopier to the school was well appreciated.

“It’s a very, very nice gesture from First Regional,” he said, explaining that the machine will empower the school and by extension the community.

“It is such a needy thing at Islington,” he added. Tyrell further explained that the photocopier will come in handy at a time when the school is preparing for internal exams.

Chief executive officer (CEO) of Port Maria Hospital Althea Gardner expressed gratitude for the suction machine which will be used in the Accident and Emergency department.

“We are grateful for this gift… We thank you for your partnership with us,” she said.

Lorna Bailey, principal of Marymount High, said the institution was also grateful for the donation from First Regional towards the acquisition of a photocopier for the school.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, who was a guest at the opening, praised the credit union for its support of the community and its outreach activities. He said credit unions are as relevant today as when they were first created, being the answer for many with a minimal income at their disposal.

First Regional Cooperative Credit Union CEO Patricia Smith said the opening of the branch reflects the organisation’s commitment to the people of St Mary.

“We take this interest in you very seriously,” she explained, adding that it was more than providing financial services but contributing to the community.

“This is our small way of giving back to the parish of St Mary as we say thanks for the support,” she said in regards to donations made.

Donald Mason, president of the credit union, explained that the renovation at the Highgate location will provide more spacious accommodation for customers.
