Immaculate, Campion celebrate top ranking
IMMACULATE Conception High School has been ranked the top performing all-island secondary level institution for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) in 2013, while Campion College is the top performer for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).
The rankings were last week released by Educate Jamaica, an independent think tank organisation.
In the Academic Championship CSEC Ranking 2014 publication based on research of the CSEC results for last year, Immaculate received 100 per cent.
The rankings are based on the performance of schools in obtaining five or more subjects in the most recent CSEC examinations.
“What we have done at Educate Jamaica is to look at each school and calculate what percentage of students they are turning out at the end of grade 11, with a minimum of five CSEC subjects (including mathematics and/or English) and based on the percentage obtained, they are ranked,” Educate Jamaica said.
Immaculate was followed in descending order by Campion College and St Hilda’s Diocesan High School, which placed second and third respectively.
Campion scored 99.5 per cent and St Hilda’s, 98.84 per cent.
Sister Angella Harris, principal of Immaculate, said the achievement is a wonderful feeling, and credits the hard work of her teachers.
“I am overjoyed. The girls are diligent students and this is fair representation of their performance,” she said.
“I want to add that this achievement is based on a solid programme we have instilled in our girls from the seventh grade. We have high expectations from them when they enter grade seven. Our academic programme is wide, with compulsory subjects which they focus on from grade nine up. We also give students the opportunity to explore different areas which they feel they will do well in,” she said.
The other schools in the top 10 were:
4th place — Hampton High School with 97.7 per cent
5th place — Mount Alvernia High School with 97.66 per cent
6th place — Wolmer’s Girls’ with 96.9 per cent
7th place — Westwood High with 95.21 per cent
8th place — Glenmuir High with 95.14 per cent
9th place — DeCarteret College with 94.4 per cent
10th place — St Andrew High with 92.9 per cent.
For CAPE, Campion College topped the list with a 96.8 per cent pass rate. Immaculate followed in second with 91.7 per cent.
“This ranking highlights the CAPE institutions that are doing the best at the top three levels of the grade scale,” Educate Jamaica said.
“We have deliberately avoided using grades four and five in our measurement as we believe this is a race to the bottom. We wanted to highlight schools that were generating excellent results at the grades one to three levels.
“Some may not agree with this. After all, CAPE says four and five are passes. We acknowledge four and five as passes for the purposes of exam; however, we wanted to measure schools performing at the top end of the scale.”
Campion principal Grace Baston said the school has consistently aspired to achieve, and the achievement represents how hard-working the students of the institution and teachers were for that academic year.
“Over the years, the teachers of Campion College have invested much in our students at the advanced level. Being placed first for CAPE represents the high values and standards which our educators and students aspire to achieve on an annual basis,” Baston said.
