Burchell, Thomas cop gold at NCAA Div 1 Outdoors Champs
Sprinter Remona Burchell in the women’s 100m and triple jumper Shanieka Thomas were gold medallists at last weekend’s NCAA Division One Outdoors championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Burchell, a junior (third year) student at the University of Alabama and former sprinter at Cambridge High and Herbert Morrison Technical added the outdoor title to the Indoor 60m gold she won earlier this year in what is an outstanding year so far.
Additionally, former Frome Technical and Edwin Allen High student Danniel Thomas was second in the women’s discus throw at the three-day event.
Thomas, who is attending Kent State University and is the Mid-American Conference champion in both the discus throw and shot put, threw 57.11m to finish behind Texas A&M’s Shelbi Vaughn’s 60.02m.
Kellion Knibb, the new national record holder who won the ACC Conference Outdoors and NCAA East Regionals, was a disappointing fifth in the discus throw.
Burchell, who is ranked number three in the world in the 100m, confirmed her favourite’s tag and battled a stiff headwind of -3.4 metres-per-second to win in 11.25 seconds.
Earlier in the semi-finals she had run a wind-aided 10.95 seconds (2.3m/s) to lead the qualifiers into the final.
Thomas, a senior at San Diego State, successfully defended her triple jump title after also winning at the Mountain West and West Regional.
She dominated the competition and had three jumps better than second-placed LaQue Moen-Davis of Texas A&M, whose best effort was 13.56m.
Meanwhile, former NCAA champion Chad Wright could only manage fourth in the men’s discus (61.93m), as he closed out his NCAA career at Nebraska.
Nikita Tracey was also fourth in the women’s 400m hurdles, competing for Louisiana State University.
