Teen runners shine at Everyone’s A Winner Road Race

Seventeen-year-old Garfield Gordon ran a time of 22 minutes and 15 seconds in the featured 7K race, to be crowned the overall male winner of the Everyone’s A Winner Best Dressed Chicken Road Race Series.

Demarley Johnson was second with 22:47 minutes, while Robin Rowe took third with 23:06 at Sunday’s finale of the three-part series at Hope Gardens.

Danielle James took top honours after posting 26:20 minutes to cross the line first in the female 7K. Elisabeth Mondon was second with 27:40, while third place went to Janetta Robinson, who managed 30 minutes and 34 seconds.

There was an even greater surprise on the day when 13-year-old Crystal Brown of Mavis Bank High School took the female 5K race in a time of 21 minutes and 31 seconds. Brown beat out women twice her age to cop the 5K crown as Juliett Dinnal could only manage second in 22:29, while Simar Smith came in third, posting 25:28.

The 5K saw 26-year-old Ryan Lawrence crossing the line first in an impressive time of 17 minutes and 34 seconds. Lawrence, however, was followed by two teenagers in Chevaun Williams and Dexter Williams, both 17 years old, who placed second and third, respectively, with times of 18:55 and 19:05.

Running Events Limited’s race director Alfred ‘Frano’ Francis was extremely happy with the 2014 edition of the Everyone’s A Winner Best Dressed Chicken Road Race Series.

“The performances from our youths indicate an emergence of talent that augers well for the future of road racing in Jamaica. Overall, it has been wonderful to see the improvements in the times and basic health checks of many of our participants at the end of the series,” said Francis.

Rohan Gordon was the overall male champion in the 7K walk with 37:56 minutes, while Paula Sinclair won the overall female walk with her time of 44:50.
