Corinaldi rule JPS Western Primary Champs
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Corinaldi Avenue Primary of St James won their second hold on the JPS Western Primary Schools Athletics championships after topping the point’s tables at last Saturday’s sixth staging of the event, held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Led by three class champions, Corinaldi Avenue scored 238 points to win their second title after winning the first in 2010, and led a St James clean sweep of the top three places.
Last year’s champions Howard Cooke Primary were second with 200 points, while Catherine Hall Primary took third place with 197 points.
Wakefield Primary of Trelawny were fourth with 169 points and Barracks Road Primary rounded out the top five with 156 points.
Corinaldi Avenue won the girls’ section with 147 points, ahead of Howard Cooke’s 96, while Wakefield Primary were the boys’ champions with 131 points, beating Catherine Hall Primary’s 107.
Fifteen new records were established on the day with some broken more than once; the boys’ 8-9 ball throw was broken on at least four occasions with Shane Spence of Kew Park Primary winning with 56.19m to beat Omar Locke of Enfield Primary 52.73m and Howard Cooke’s Alex Forbes-51.30m -all beating the old mark of 49.84m set last year.
Shericka Christie of Enfield Primary smashed her own record 38.78m set last year when she defended her title with a throw of 49.19m.
Corinaldi Avenue’s Tamera Gutzmore broke the record in the Class 1 girls’ 400m, running 1 minute 03.88 seconds in the preliminaries to break the four year- old mark of 1 minute 04.32 set by Nicolee Foster, then ran faster in the finals, clocking 1 minute 02.21 seconds for the first of two gold medals.
Catherine Hall Primary’s Daniel Binns ran 1 minute 00.01 seconds to win the Class 1 boys’ 400m, breaking the 1 minute 01.00 seconds record set in 2009 by Rasheem Barnes.
